Introduction

The Salarjung Museum is located at Dar-ul-Shifa. It was established in 1951. This art museum has collection of manuscripts, paintings, artefacts, sculptures and more from various parts of the world. The collection was of Salar Jung III. This is a popular tourist attraction in Hyderabad.

How to get to Salarjung Museum

Take the metro to MGBS metro station. Salar Jung Museum is a 10-minute walk from here.

The best way to see the tourist attractions Salar Jung Museum, Charminar and Chowmahalla Palace is at first have a 10-minute walk from MGBS metro station to Salar Jung Museum. The distance between Salar Jung Museum and Charminar is about 1.5 km. It will take about 25-minute walk. An auto charges about Rs.100 (about $1.2). There are bus stops nearby, if you prefer bus. It is about 8-minute walk from Charminar to Chowmahalla Palace.

This is a popular attraction. It is an English Bracket Clock that has a small toy of a bearded man. He comes out every hour 3 minutes before every hour and strikes the gong. Another toy man strikes the seconds. One can have the best experience at 12 Noon. Salarjung III acquired this clock from the Cooke and Kelvey Co. It has more than 350 parts.

The Salar Jung Museum has ground floor and first floor. Each floor has western bloc (Mir Turab Ali Khan Bhavan), central bloc and eastern bloc (Mir Laiq Ali Khan Bhavan). Each bloc has different galleries.

Founder’s gallery with portraits of Salarjung I, II, III and more, Indian sculpture dating back till 1st century BCE. Sculpture gallery has different stone sculptures of India.

Western Block Ground Floor Galleries at Salarjung Museum

The ground floor has European sculptures made of Marble and Bronze. Prominent among the original marble sculpture is the sculpture of the Veiled Rebecca, a character of the ‘Old Testament’. There are historical and mythological bronze sculptures. Bronze is an alloy of copper and tin.

The first floor has paintings, porcelain, glass, clocks and French gallery. There are oil and water paintings of famous European painters. The porcelain collection has original pieces dating back to Louis XV and Napoleon. There are various clocks from different European countries. There is a collection of various glasses.

Eastern Block Ground Floor Galleries at Salarjung Museum

The ground floor has a large collection of far-east wood carvings including furniture and sculptures and other objects. They date back till the 17th Century. They are made of different types of wood.

History of Salarjung Museum

The collections of Salar Jung III (Nawab Mir Yousuf Ali Khan) from all over the world were at Diwan Devdi. This has been made into Salar Jung Museum and was inaugurated by Jawaharlal Nehru in 1951. The Salar Jung Museum has been shifted to new building at Dar-ul-Shifa in 1968. It was declared as manuscript conservation center in 2003.
