Introduction

The Golconda Fort is one of the popular attractions of Hyderabad. Listed as archaeological treasure by the Archaeological Survey of India, the Fort is in the tentative list of World Heritage Sites of UNESCO. It is one of the popular tourist attractions in Hyderabad. The walk up the Fort takes about half-hour to one hour. Many tourists visit this place every year.

How to get to Golconda Fort

The easiest way to reach Golconda fort is taking the “Blue line” of metro to “Peddamma Gudi” metro station. From here the Golconda Fort is around 7 Kilometers. Auto will charge around Rs.200 (subject to change) and it will take about half-hour from here.

The bus number of the bus that goes from Mehdipatnam or Koti to Golconda is “65G”.

Taxis and tour packages are the other ways to reach.

About Golconda Fort

The name is derived from the Telugu word “Golla Konda”, meaning shepherd’s hill. The Golconda Fort spreading around 11 Km has bastions, palaces, worship places, royal apartments, halls and eight gates and four drawbridges. The main gate is “Fateh Darwaza”. It has giant iron spikes to protect from elephants. It was once popular for diamond trade.

History

The Golconda Fort which was under the Kakatiya rulers came under the control of Bahamani rulers in 1363 CE. Later it came into the hands of Qutub Shahi rulers and Golconda became the capital in 1518 CE. Later it came under the rule of the Mughals.
